Usha Krishnan’s debut directorial Raja Mandhiri launched its trailer at the Prasad Labs in Vadapalani earlier this week. Scheduled to release on June 24, the movie is a comedy drama starring Kalaiarasan (Madras), Kaali Venkat, and Shaalin Zoya.
Raja Mandhiri‘s trailer is lighthearted and cheerful. There’s chemistry between the lead pair (Kalaiarasan and Kaali), a melodramatic father, two separate romance tracks, humour from comedian Balasaravana, catchy songs amidst paddy fields, and the obligatory twist in the tale. The songs, composed by Justin Prabhakharan, are memorable and rustic; particularly ‘Bam Bam Bam Bambaram’, which is strongly reminiscent of ‘Choo Choo Maari’ from Poo.
Actor Kalairasan, who was initially skeptical of playing a comic role, said he was happy with the on-screen result. Like his character, he too loves to engage in friendly banter with co-actor Kaali Venkat. On this occasion, he insisted that they sit together on stage. Shaalin Zoya, who makes her debut with this film, thanked director Usha Krishnan for the opportunity, and said she had put in a lot of effort for the film. Kaali Venkat raised eyebrows by saying that the story had been plagiarized, only to clarify moments later that it was as if he was watching his own life story unfold on screen. A visibly elated Usha Krishnan thanked the cast and crew. She said the movie has likeable and candid characters and a plot that people could relate to.
Director P Ranjith, one of the guests of honour, commended the director and said the plot was refreshing and flowed with ease. Director Samuthrakani, another guest of honour, also praised the director and said that the movie has captured the essence of the countryside.
