The British Academy Film and Television Awards on Wednesday announced the list of nominations for its craft and television segments. Small Axe, an anthology series based on the real-life experiences of London’s West Indian community, received 15 nominations, nine in craft and six in television. It is followed by The Crown with 10 nominations, and I May Destroy You with eight nominations.
Spread across 48 categories, Small Axe garnered nominations in Costume Design, Director: Fiction, Editing Fiction, Make-up and Hair Design, Photography and Lighting: Fiction, Production Design, Scripted Casting, Sound: Fiction, Writer Drama, Leading Actress, Mini-Series, with two nominations each in Leading Actor and Supporting Actor categories. The series is set between 1969 and 1982.
The Crown has six craft and four television nominations in Costume Design, Director (Fiction), Make Up and Hair Design, Original Music, Sound (Fiction), Special, Visual and Graphic Effects, Drama Series, Leading Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress.
The Netflix series that will begin production of its fifth season soon, left an indelible mark on the awards with three wins at the Golden Globe Awards and four wins at the Critics’ Choice Awards despite the controversy surrounding the depiction of British Royal family members.
The third with eight nominations is HBO’s drama series I May Destroy You that deals with the question of sexual consent in contemporary life and how, in the new landscape of dating and relationships, we make the distinction between liberation and exploitation, as per IMDb.
With four nominations in craft and television, it features in categories Director (Fiction), Editing (Fiction), Make Up and Hair Design, Writer (Drama), Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Mini-Series and Supporting Actress. It won the 2021 Gotham Independent Film Awards in the Best Breakthrough Series- Short Form category, and actor cum writer Michaela Coel who played the protagonist, was nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in the leading female actor category for television film/limited series.
Other popular series like Sex Education also garnered several nominations, including the Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme, bagged by first time nominees Aimee Lou Wood and Emma Wackey.
According to a statement, Big Bang Theory actor Kunal Nayyar received his first nomination in the supporting actor category with Netflix series Criminal.
While Amazon Prime Video’s Normal People garnered seven nominations, Channel 4’s Adult Material and Sky Atlantic’a I Hate Suzie ended up with five nominations each, and four nominations each for This Country, Strictly Come Dancing, and Once Upon a Time in Iraq.
While the Television Awards ceremony will take place on June 6 and will be broadcast on BBC One, the Craft Awards will be held on May 24 and will be streamed on BAFTA’s social channels.
