Written by the Oscar Award-winning director Ray, the Feluda series comprises over 30 books, documenting the life of a fictional a young Bengali private detective, Prodosh C Mitter (better known as Feluda), aided by his nephew Tapesh Mitter (also known as Topshe) and author Lalmohan Ganguli (better known by his pen name Jatayu). Most of the stories see the three embarking on adventures to historic spots or tourist areas, which then become the setting for the stories. Considered to be a must-read among Bengalis, these crime and murder mysteries are usually ridden with literary puzzles which the trio attempt to solve.
Ray had made two hit film adaptations- Sonar Kella (1974), and Joi Baba Felunath (1979)- with late actor Soumitra Chatterjee cast as Feluda. The massive success of these films helped in propelling the making of several television and web series.
While Ray’s son Sandip Ray directed Sabyasachi Chakraborty as Feluda in both the television series as well as in the later films, actors like Shashi Kapoor, Abir Chatterjee and Parambrata Chattopadhyay have also essayed the role of the young detective in the past.
