Jayam Ravi‘s 25th film, Bhoomi, will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar during Pongal, on January 14, 2021. Ravi tweeted out a press release on Thursday to say that the makers of Bhoomi had planned to release the film in theatres, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, had opted for an OTT release.
Ravi wrote, “I am excited along with Disney+ Hotstar to be a part of all your Pongal 2021 celebrations right in the heart of your homes. There have been many festive occasions when you have visited theatres to watch my films as a part of your celebrations. This time, I feel [happy] to celebrate the festivities with a beautiful movie in your homes.”
A source close to the film told Silverscreen India that Bhoomi deals with the collapse of agriculture in an increasingly corporatised world.
The film was initially scheduled to release in May this year but due to the ongoing pandemic, the makers had to delay the release. Thus far, two posters have been released for the movie, and a teaser was released earlier this year.
Bhoomi marks the reunion of Ravi and director Lakshman, who have worked together in Romeo Juliet (2015) and Bogan (2017). It will also be the Tamil debut of actor Nidhhi Agerwal and the debut film for Hindi actor Ronit Roy, who plays the antagonist.
