What’s New This Week: 9 Movies and Shows Releasing on OTT Platforms This Week

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Zee 5, and Disney+ Hotstar all have new releases this week. Here’s a list of nine movies and TV shows to watch out for on OTT platforms between December 18 and December 24.

Paava Kadhaigal – Netflix (December 18)
Paava Kadhaigal is Netflix’s first Tamil anthology film and has four stories, directed by Gautham Vasudev MenonSudha KongaraVetrimaaran, and Vignesh Shivan. The film, according to its trailer, focuses on themes of honour, love, sin, and pride.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – Netflix (December 18)
Directed by George C Wolfe,  Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom features Viola Davis as Ma Rainey, along with late actor Chadwick Boseman as an ambitious trumpeter, Levee. The film, an adaptation of August Wilson’s play by the same name, revolves around Ma Rainey, one of the earliest African-American professional blues singers, popularly known as the “Mother of the Blues”. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is Boseman’s last appearance in a film.

Unpaused – Amazon Prime Video (December 18)
Unpaused is Amazon Prime Video’s first Hindi anthology film. It features five short films directed by Raj & DK, Nikkhil AdvaniTannishtha ChatterjeeAvinash Arun, and Nitya Mehra. The stories delve into themes of friendship, love, hope, second chances, and new beginnings.

Home for Christmas Season 2 – Netflix (December 18)
With a release timed around Christmas, the second season of Home for Christmas is Netflix’s first Norwegian original series. The show revolves around a single woman Johanne. Tired of the constant comments on her relationship status, she embarks on a 24-day hunt for a boyfriend to bring home for Christmas.

Black Widows – Zee 5 (December 18)
Black Widows is the story of three friends who are in abusive relationships with their husbands, and are consequently forced to plan the murder of their respective husbands. A retiring cop attempts to get to the bottom of the case.

The Legend of El Cid – Amazon Prime Video (December 18)
Starring Jamie Lorente who played Denver in Money Heist, The Legend of El Cid is a Spanish series about Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as “El Cid”. Vivar, who was a war hero in medieval Spain, is forced to prove his innocence after being accused of the king’s murder.

On Pointe – Disney+ Hotstar (December 18)
On Pointe is a six-part documentary series featuring the famous American School of Ballet in New York City. It follows the lives of students aged eight to eighteen who are pursuing their dream of becoming ballet dancers. It also looks at all the work that goes into bringing the New York City Ballet’s holiday classic “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” onstage at the Lincoln Center.

The Midnight Sky – Netflix (December 23)
The Midnight Sky is a science-fiction drama starring George Clooney, Felicity Jones and Kyle Chandler. After a global catastrophe, a lone scientist in the Arctic has to contact a crew of astronauts, to warn them not to return to Earth.

Your Name Engraved Herein – Netflix (December 23)
Your Name Engraved Herein is a Taiwanese film set in the 1970s just after Taiwan was liberated from martial law. Jia-han and Birdy fall in love amid family pressures, homophobia, and social stigma.
