Yesterday was KV Mahadevan’s 101st birth anniversary. As a tribute, our song of the day is ‘Aayiram Nilave Vaa’ from the 1969 film Adimai Penn, an iconic KVM-MGR collaboration that also introduced SP Balasubrahmanyam.
Composer and lyricist KV Mahadevan worked in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema for over 50 years. The 1960s and 1970s were the best years of his career, when he composed for Manchi Manasulu, Lava Kusa, Thiruvilaiyadal, Aadhiparasakthi, Thillana Mohanambal and Netru Indru Naalai. His songs in MGR and Sivaji Ganesan’s films are still popular.
‘Aayiram Nilave Vaa’ is a love song featuring MGR and Jayalalithaa, who has two roles in the film. He mistakes Pavala Valli for his lover Jeeva, and sings a duet with her, asking for the night to be endless. This was an important film in MGR and Jayalalithaa’s career, and ran in theatres even recently after Jayalalithaa’s demise.
