On Kaarthigai Deepam, a special song of the day. Kaarthigai is perhaps a more important festival for Tamil people than Deepavali, as it is associated with the Tamil god Murugan, and involves a ritual and celebratory bonfire.
The film is Rajinikanth’s second collaboration with director Suresh Krishna, who would then later team up again for Baasha. Rajinikanth as Muthuveerappan -a- Muthu, loves Meena as Devyani. Muthu wants to become a film music director so goes to the city, participates in the 90s version of Super Singer, wins the contest. Meanwhile a flood has washed away his village and Devyani is lost, presumed dead. So Muthu’s mother convinces Muthu to marry Rupa, played by Roja. Then Devyani comes back after a gap, and some comedy in the form of Senthil happens, and they all lived happily ever after.
What is really important about the film is the music. Scored by Ilaiyaraaja, it featured this famous song – a Kaarthigai Deepam special, and the superhit ‘Konji Konji Alaigal Oda’ song, among others.
