Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Comedy Series’ Eighth Season to be Its Final One

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the American comedy television series, will soon be airing its eighth and final season, announced creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur on Friday.

The eighth season will have 10 episodes, the lowest of all the seasons, and will feature actors Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti and others.

The cop-comedy series, which began streaming from 2013, revolves around “brilliant but immature Brooklyn detective Jake Peralta” who “must learn to follow the rules and be a team player when his squad gets an exacting new captain,” as per Netflix’s synopsis.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, NBC Channel that has been broadcasting the series from its sixth season, opted to delay Brooklyn‘s return to give the award-winning comedy a proper send-off. NBC has already set its “midseason” slate as part of a crowded broadcast calendar in April. Rather than releasing it in August, NBC will use the Olympics to market the final season and give the show a big promotional push for an expected 2021-22 premiere.

The show took a significant set back when a Black American citizen, George Floyd, was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis in 2020.

Samberg, who is also the executive producer, told People in July 2020, “We’re taking a step back, and the writers are all rethinking how we’re going to move forward, as well as the cast. We’re all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now, and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about. I know that we’ll figure it out, but it’s definitely a challenge, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Floyd’s death catapulted into a worldwide movement, called Black Lives Matter, which protested against police brutalities against Black Americans. The official page of the movement put out a set of demands, with one of them asking to defund the police forces.

“The police that met our BLM protestors this summer with assault rifles, teargas, and military-grade protective gear were the same police that, on Wednesday, met white supremacists with patience and the benefit of the doubt, going so far as to pose for selfies with rioters. The contrast was jarring, but not for Black people. We have always known who the police truly protect and serve. D.C. has the most police per capita in the country; more funding is not the solution,” the official page said.

The writers of the show have also been planning to look at ways to incorporate the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on first-responders like the cops, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Co-star Terry Crews said in June 2020 that the first four scripts of season eight were discarded after the protests following Floyd’s killing, the report added.

While the show was initially cancelled by Fox, that streamed it for the first five season, it was revived by NBC after fans of the show called for a social media campaign asking for the show’s renewal.

Season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine released on Netflix India on February 10 and is currently ranked the number 1 in the country.
