Also written by Sundar, the film is backed by the banner Krithika Production. The teaser of Kannitheevu was released by actor Vijay Sethupathi on social media on Wednesday.

Sundar, who is awaiting the release of his thriller film Garjanai, starring Trisha, said Kannitheevu revolves around four girls who have been friends since childhood. “They encounter a problem in their area, protest against it, and emerge victorious. However, their success leads them into another problem, which affects them personally.”

Varalaxmi, Aishwarya Dutta, Ashna Zaveri, and Subhiksha essay the four friends.

Speaking about the casting, the filmmaker said the four actors were the primary choices for their respective roles. “The film does not really delve into the characters’ professional or romantic lives. Only Varalaxmi’s profession as a boxer is shown. While Ashna Zaveri is her college-mate, the others are residents of the same area.”

Sundar added that actor Livingston and stunt coordinator Super Subbarayan will also feature in the film. Telugu actor Indraaniel plays the antagonist.

The filmmaker noted that his primary intention with Kannitheevu was to put a spin on the predominantly male-centric action-adventure genre. “I wanted to take that genre and make a female-oriented film.”

“I usually write my scripts by taking inspiration from my travels and the conversations I have. The script of this film was finalised only a month before we started to shoot,” he added.

The film’s pre-production work began in 2019 and filming commenced the next year. However, it was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The film was finally wrapped up this June.

Kannitheevu was shot by cinematographer Chitty Babu in Chennai and Kerala, where a crocodile fight sequence was filmed, the director revealed.

The film features three songs, composed by RS Raj Prathap, he added.

Kannitheevu is currently in the final stages of post-production and the makers are looking for a theatrical release.
