Four big-budget official remakes are in production. Made in three languages, the remakes feature stars with top-billing in their respective industries – Kamal Haasan, Akshay Kumar, Nagarjuna, and Karthi Sivakumar.
Thoongavanam (Tamil)
Kamal Haasan’s next film Thoongavanam, is an official remake of the 2011 French movie Sleepless Night (Nuit Blanche). The French film is a thriller, directed by Frederic Jardin. The Tamil version is directed by Rajesh M Selva, Kamal’s long-time associate. Apart from Kamal Haasan, the film stars Trisha, Asha Sarath, Prakash Raj, and Kishore. The film is being shot simultaneously in Telugu, with the same cast and crew. The Telugu version is titled Cheekati Rajyam.
Brothers (Hindi)
One of the most anticipated films of 2015, Brothers stars Akshay Kumar, Siddharth Malhotra, and Jackie Shroff. The film is an official remake of the 2011 Hollywood film Warrior, directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton as two estranged brothers. The film was widely praised by critics for being “heartbreaking and emotionally satisfying”.
Nagarjuna-Karthi film (Telugu-Tamil)
Directed by Vamsi Paidipally, the Nagarjuna–Karthi Sivakumar film is an unofficial remake of the critically-acclaimed 2011 French film, The Intouchables. The Indian version features Akkineni Nagarjun, Karthi, and Tamannah Bhatia in the lead. The French film is a comedy drama directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, and starring François Cluzet and Omar Sy. The film is about the relationship of a quadriplegic patient and his caretaker. Reportedly, Nagarjuna plays the patient, and Karthi, his caretaker.
Saif Ali Khan’s untitled film (Hindi)
Reportedly, Saif Ali Khan will star in an official remake of Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth’s Before I Go to Sleep, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Before I Go To Sleep is a 2014 British-American-French-Swedish mystery thriller, written and directed by Rowan Joffé. It’s a cinematic adaptation of a book by SJ Watson.
