Filmmaker Teja, who is awaiting the release of Hora Hori, will deviate from his usual lighthearted romantic films with his next project, reportedly a science-fiction revenge drama revolving around a boy with an artificial arm. The film will use concepts related to bionics, the application of biological methods and natural systems in engineering and technology. According to sources, the director has already ordered an artificial arm, and the film will go on floors later this year. Teja has previously worked on films like Jayam, Nijam, and Dhairyam.

Bionics and cyborg technology in general has been a successful theme in science fiction films, including the 1987 RoboCop, the highly popular Terminator series, and film adaptations of iconic science-fiction writer Issac Asimov’s Robot series. The theme of the ‘artificial arm’ is also a recurring trope in popular culture, especially characteristic of figures who straddle both good and evil, such as Anakin Skywalker of the Star Wars series and Long John Silver of Treasure Island fame, along with the more notorious Captain Cook from Peter Pan. The Star Trek franchise even had an entire culture revolving around a cyborg civilization, namely, the Borg.
