Actor Vijay has been criticised by the BJP for commenting on Modi’s demonetisation initiative. Earlier in a press conference, Vijay had said: “While I wholeheartedly approve of Modi’s decision, I feel that 80% of India should not suffer for the sake of the 20% who hold black money.”

Tamil Nadu BJP’s Vice-President, Vanathi Srinivasan slammed the actor in an interview with Anandavikatan, where she said: “I would like to say something to celebrities who reference the story of a grandmother who committed suicide recently due to lack of money. Even before Modi announced this initiative, people have died because of lack of money. This is not a side-effect of his reform. Instead of talking about the things that should have been done, celebrities with lots of money must contribute to making the lives of poor people easier. Instead of making these comments and holding press conferences, they should involve themselves in reform activities. ”
While Vanathi refrained from directly accusing Vijay, her comments did not go unnoticed by the actor’s fans, many of whom used social media to threaten Vanathi.
Actor Rajinikanth’s support for Modi too has came under criticism. Director Ameer Sultan accused Rajinikanth of “cherry-picking” causes to support. He also said that Rajini’s decision was a clear case of double standards.
