Akshay Kumar has begun shooting for Padman, a film produced by Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar, and (supposedly) loosely based on the life of Arunachalam Murugananthan. The film is being directed by R Balki.

Twinkle’s first home production, Padman, is based on a short story she wrote as part of a book, The Legend of Laxmi Prasad. Called The Sanitary Man, the short story is about the life of Arunachalam Murugananthan, the Padma Shri awardee who revolutionised sanitary pads by making low-cost pads affordable to rural women in south India.
While it was originally reported that a south Indian actor would play the title role in Padman, R Balki and Akshay later announced that Akshay Kumar himself would play the lead. The film also features Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in important roles.
