Priyanka Chopra will reportedly play Indian astronaut Kalpana Chawla in the biopic directed by Priya Mishra. According to a Mid-Day report, the debutante filmmaker confirmed working on the movie for years.
“I have been working on it for seven years. A new production banner will back the project,” she was quoted as saying. Priya has also met Kalpana’s parents several times as part of her research for the film.
Last year, Viacom 18 had announced a film based on the life of an astronaut without revealing names. A source told the tabloid that Priyanka’s team has been working on it for about a year, with the script locked.
However, the actresses’s team hasn’t confirmed her involvement in the project. “There are many filmmakers who are keen to work with Priyanka, but she will take her time to make an official announcement about her forthcoming projects. Right now it’s too early to disclose anything,” a source close to the actress told Deccan Chronicle.

Kalpana Chawla, who hailed from Karnal, Haryana, was the first Indian woman astronaut in space. She died on her second expedition along with six other crew members in February 2003 when the space shuttle Columbia exploded. She spent 31 days, 14 hours and 54 minutes in space.
This wouldn’t be the first biopic Priyanka Chopra would be acting in. Mary Kom (2014) was the last biopic Priyanka was seen in, playing the Olympic winning boxing champ from Manipur.
Priyanka also has a mega project with Sanjay Leela Bhansali which is reportedly based on Sahir Ludhianvi. She also has one with Anirudh Roy Chowdhary.
