Suniel Shetty Blames Himself For “Screwing Up” His Career

Suniel Shetty, in a candid interview with the Hindustan Times, said that he felt no jealousy towards contemporaries Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar whose films rule the box-office these days. The actor, who has transformed himself into a fitness icon, will be hosting an adventure reality show India’s Asli Champion. He said he feels responsible for “screwing up” his own career.

“I’m not unhappy or cribbing about where they are in their career. I’m not where they are because I screwed up. So, who is to blame for that? I can’t blame anybody else for that. If I made the wrong choice of films, then they are my choices,” he said, adding that he should have worked harder.

“I strongly believe that to undo what I’ve done, I have to work hard to choose the right film. I don’t need to be greedy. The media have been very kind to me and have kept me alive [in the public eye] in the past three-and-a-half years,” he added.

He said there were several factors he could have avoided while choosing films. “I supported people who were not financially very strong. Believing that a film would be very good, I went ahead with it,” he said, emphasising that a certain calculation is involved when it comes to choosing a film, with producers changing shots and often releasing a film without publicity.

While he starred in several big films in the ’90s and early 2000s, Suniel hasn’t starred in a movie since Desi Kattey in 2014. His big return was in Salman Khan’s Jai Ho where he had a special appearance. He will soon reprise his role in the third installment of the comedy caper Hera Pheri 3, starring alongside Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal.
