Malayalam Filmmaker K R Mohanan Dies At 69

Renowned Malayalam filmmaker, K R Mohanan, died on Sunday at a hospital in Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala. He was 69. The director, known for his movies like Ashwathama (1978), Purushartham (1987) and Swaroopam (1992), also made documentaries. 

Mohanan was a graduate of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and had a prominent role in the formation of the CPI(M) backed Kairali Channel in the early 90s. He is said to have headed the programme division of the channel in its formative days. Mohanan was also the Chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy.

According to an IANS report, Bina Paul, Vice-Chairperson of the academy recalled that the filmmaker was a quiet man with clarity of thought. “He was very clear about his notion of movies. We learnt so much from his guidance in conducting film festivals,” she said. 

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also condoled his demise.

Mohanan’s last rites will conducted in Thrissur, his home town.
