Saif Ali Khan, at a recent event hosted by a popular newspaper, declared that the greatest thing about the film industry was that it is democratic: “First of all, you can’t control it. It’s not actually nepotism or anything like that. It doesn’t matter if you’re somebody’s son. A spot boy can walk in on set one day and become an actor. It’s inclusive that way. It’s like an umbrella that brings everybody together, irrespective of caste, creed or religion,” he said.

The actor was criticised recently for his involvement in an ill-conceived sketch about nepotism at IIFA. Addressing the debate, he said: “We do live in times where celebs and people are in general cautious about what they say. I think we live in so much fear. Whether that is founded or unfounded, I am not sure but it makes me uncomfortable to not share my thoughts.”
