Jason Momoa, best known for playing Khal Drogo in the TV series Game of Thrones and Aquaman in Justice League, has apologised for cracking a rape joke back in 2011. The video of the actor bragging about how he loves his job because he got to rape beautiful women on-screen resurfaced, prompting the actor to apologise for it after six years.
The video features Momoa along with his Game of Thrones colleagues at a 2011 San Diego Comic Con. Next to him are Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and creater DB Weiss and David Benioff. When asked about how he liked working on the show, Momoa counted ‘getting to rape beautiful women’ as one of the perks as he pointed towards Clarke, who plays his wife Daenerys Targaryen, sitting next to him.
Everyone around him laughs at the joke, and Momoa appears to be quite proud of it, too.
Taking to Instagram, Momoa apologised, writing how he awoke to news of people reacting to that old video and how he is still disappointed in himself for making such a joke.
Primarily appearing in the first season of the show, Momoa’s character, Khal Drogo, rapes his nubile wife, Daenerys on their wedding night. While the books, written by George RR Martin, does not feature rape, the TV show created by DB Weiss and David Benioff included it otherwise, in addition to transforming other scenes that never really took place in the books to rape scenes on screen.
Responses to Momoa’s apology have mostly been by men commending the actor’s actions. Some even wondered why he had to apologise since he was “only just joking”.
Momoa’s video at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con resurfaced owing to there being a dialogue initiated ever since the news of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct gained attention. Celebrities and people social media have thus started calling out men and their sexual misconduct with women.
