After a long delay, the shoot for Sundar C’s Sangamithra will begin in August, according to a source from its production house. The film was launched last year, but has faced several delays leading to reports that it was shelved.
According to a source, “The delay was caused by Shruti Haasan’s exit. We had to find a replacement for her. Now that Disha Patani has stepped in to play the lead role, we had to figure out the schedules of other actors as well. Thenandal Films was busy promoting Mersal and so we had to wait for a while. Now that the focus is back on Sangamithra, we will go on floors soon.”
The film’s team launched the posters of the film at the Cannes Film Festival last year. The project’s then female lead, Shruti Haasan, attended the event along with Jayam Ravi, who is the male lead. However, she later announced her exit from the film. Haasan said that she had to give the film a miss as she was not given a ‘proper bound script or a date calendar’.

“Shruti had to unfortunately take a call not to be a part of Sangamithra. Knowing it was a massive undertaking and a long commitment spanning over two years, she knew the importance of her training, a comprehensive script and proper date calendar. She hired and started training with one of best combat trainers April onwards to make sure she was ready in time for shoot,” the actress’s spokesperson had said.
Thenandal Films, however, refuted Shruti’s claims. They felt that they could not work with Shruti, as a result of which the actor and production house decided to part ways.
Disha Patani, star of Kung Fu Yoga, Baaghi, was then brought in as Shruti’s replacement. Patani makes her Tamil debut with this project. Music will be composed by AR Rahman, while Sabu Cyril takes care of the art direction.
