Veteran actor turned politician Kamal Haasan, on Friday, slammed AMMA’s decision to reinstate actor Dileep, an accused in the case of abduction and sexual assault of an actress.
During an interactive session at the Manorama News Conclave 2018 in Kochi, the actor said that it was not right on AMMA’s part to reinstate Dileep without discussing with the other members. He further said that Dileep can be forgiven on the grounds of humanity, but taking him back into an organization is a decision that must be made collectively only after consulting other groups and individuals who feel otherwise about the decision, reported The News Minute.
Kamal reportedly said: “AMMA must have a dialogue between the people or groups who are saying that this shouldn’t be done. That’s my take on this issue. And ultimately, its a congregation of artistes. If everybody does not cooperate, how will it ever function?”
In his speech, the actor also addressed the gender discrimination existing in the film industry and the formation of the Women in Cinema Collective. He said that it existed in every sector and that discrimination was relatively less in the Malayalam industry. However, if the artistes feel otherwise, then more needs to be done towards bringing in gender equality. When asked about the WCC, Haasan expressed his full support to WCC.
Meanwhile, a day after Mohanlal’s press meet on AMMA’s decision to reinstate Dileep, the WCC had put out a Facebook post expressing disappointment over the newly elected AMMA president’s statement.

“The things he (Mohanlal) said regarding reinstatement of a crime accused [sic] show where and with whom he and the AMMA stand… When you even take into consideration whether to reinstate a rape accused, you ignore the fact that the rape survivor is also a member of AMMA. It’s unfortunate that you don’t understand the fundamental problem of asking a survivor to share space with the person accused of plotting the crime,” the statement read. It further added that the WCC hopes that its meeting with AMMA will have a positive outcome.
