Actor Ajith Kumar, in a press statement released on Monday evening, declared that he has no intention of entering politics, and ‘reaffirmed’ to his fans that he will not associate himself with any political organisation.
The press release – arriving on the heels of BJP State President Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan’s statement that “Ajith’s fans should take the schemes of Modi to the people” – referred to “certain news updates” linking the actor and his fans to a political outfit, and called them “baseless”. “Such news during the current time period leading up to the elections would send out wrong signals that I have political aspirations,” it read, adding that the actor had disbanded all his fan clubs for this reason.

“I have my own likes and dislikes when it comes to politics. I have neither imposed my political views on anyone nor have I allowed anyone to impose theirs on mine. I have never liked my photographs or name to be associated with any political event,” Ajith said, adding that his participation in politics is restricted to “standing in line during elections to vote”.
The actor further said that he considers acting his only profession, and also that he doesn’t support the derogatory remarks passed about other actors and critics on social media and online platforms. “Such acts will not be forgiven by the world which keeps a close watch on us.”
A scene in Ajith’s recently-released Viswasam has the actor telling Thambi Ramaiah that he doesn’t want to enter politics.
After the press statement was released, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan clarified that the actor had not been invited to join the BJP and that she respected Ajith’s opinions.
While the actor’s statements drew mixed reactions on social media, most celebrities, including Rajya Sabha MP and the president of the women’s wing of the DMK, Kanimozhi, praised the actor for his decision.
