Swedist actor Michael Nyqvist, known for playing the villain in the movie John Wick, died on Tuesday in Stockholm. The actor, 56, was battling lung cancer. According to a report in NYT, the actor’s family released a statement about his death.

Michael Nyqvist got a breakthrough performance at the age of 39, as an alcoholic husband in the movie Together. He then moved to playing meaty roles in television and films, the popular ones being that of an investigative reporter in the film adaption of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and his portrayal of a Swedish-born Russian nuclear scientist in the 2011 movie, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.
Nyqvist also authored his autobiography – Just After Dreaming – which was published in 2010. The book traces the actor’s search for his biological parents.
Michael Nyqvist is survived by his wife, Catherina and children, Ellen and Arthur.
