Khan’s bail bond surety was signed by actor Juhi Chawla, who is SRK’s business partner and friend, on Friday. However, the papers needed to reach the Arthur Road jail by 5.35 pm for him to get out on the same day. Due to a delay, Khan was released instead on Saturday morning.
Satish Maneshinde, Khan’s lawyer, had told the judge about Chawla, “She knows him since birth. His father and she are professionally associated.”
Chawla spoke to reporters outside the court after signing the surety. “There is a sense of relief in the family. We are all happy it is over,” she said.
23-year-old Khan was arrested on October 3 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) during a cruise ship drug raid based on a tip-off. The agency allegedly seized 13 gm of cocaine, 21 gm of charas or hashish, 22 pills of MDMA (ecstasy), 5 gm mephedrone, and cash worth Rs 1.33 lakh. Dhamecha is yet to be out of jail as she is facing problems arranging for a surety, Live Law reported. Her counsel had moved an urgent precipice before the High Court for her release on temporary cash bail as she is an MP resident. However, after it was rejected by the NCB, Justice NW Sambre asked the counsel to file the application and mention the matter before the vacation bench for reliefs. Alternately, her counsels are trying to get a surety and complete formalities.
Khan had moved the Bombay High Court after his bail plea was rejected by a Special NDPS court on October 20.
The High Court granted bail to Khan, Merchant, and Dhamecha on Thursday, and on Friday, it issued the bail conditions which stated that all three should execute a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh with one or more sureties in the like amount.
