Talking to Indian Express, Shyam’s close friend and actor Yashpal Sharma said that the veteran actor died at Lifeline hospital, Goregaon around 1.30 am. “The doctors informed us he died due to multiple organ failure. His body will be brought to his residence, New Dindoshi, MHADA colony, at 5-6 in the morning, followed by the funeral later in the day around 11:30-12 pm,” Sharma added.

The actor also told ANI that he had rushed to the hospital after hearing of Shyam’s demise. But, upon arrival, Sharma found Shyam still breathing. However, the doctors declared him dead soon after. “He was hospitalised for four days. He had high blood sugar and used to take injections during the shooting of his last film,” Sharma said.

Last year, the veteran actor’s family had requested financial help from the film industry after he was diagnosed with a kidney infection and admitted to the ICU.

Shyam started his career with Shyam Benegal’s Sardari Begum. In his nearly three-decade-long career, he was seen in films such as Satya, Dil Se, Lagaan, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Bandit Queen, and Slumdog Millionaire. The actor also became known for his television stint as Thakur Sajjan Singh on Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya.

Shyam had recently resumed shooting for season two of his show Mann Ki Awaaz: Pratigya 2, a sequel to the older show.

Actors Manoj Bajpayee and Manoj Joshi, and filmmaker Ashoke Pandit were among those who took to Twitter to share their condolences and remember the veteran actor.

“Rest in peace my friend!” tweeted Bajpayee, who had worked with Shyam in the film Satya.
