The past week witnessed two major releases, which, sadly, turned out to be average films for movie-goers. Dulquer Salmaan’s highly anticipated “different” film Solo released, and was met with lukewarm response. Most critics echoed a sense of being underwhelmed with director Bejoy Nambiar’s Tamil/Malayalam bilingual, in which Dulquer plays four different characters.
Saif Ali Khan’s Chef, the Hindi adaptation of the 2014 Hollywood film by Jon Favreau, turned out to be a better film. However, it still managed to be the less successful one compared to Solo.
Here’s a look at the two films’ performance at the box-office:
Solo
Owing to the theatre strike in Tamil Nadu, the film was in theatres only for a day. While Dulquer’s performance was commendable, reports, however, suggest that even as the film released in 225 screens across Kerala, it managed to make Rs 3.3 crore on its opening day.
According to Koimoi.com, on its second day, Solo managed to mint Rs 4.85 crore.
In Kochi alone, the anthology film earned Rs 8 lakh on the first day with an average theatre occupancy of 99.52 percent. Out of the total 25 shows, 22 were houseful on opening day at five multiplexes — PVR Cinemas, PVR Gold, Cinemax, Pan Cinemas and Q Cinemas, reports IB Times.
Solo, apart from Dulquer, stars an ensemble cast of Sruthi Hariharan, Sai Dhanshika, Neha Sharma, Arthi Venkatesh, Suhasini Maniratnam, Nasser, and others.

Chef, by Raja Krishna Menon, was propped up to be a fusion of Malayalee and Punjabi food. The promotions, trailer, and posters gave a glimpse into this film that also explored a father-son relationship.
However, most critics and movie-goers complained that while it was said to be a film on food and emotions, there was barely any. Not even the food.
According to trade analyst, Taran Adarsh, the film opened to a fairly poor start. Released on October 6, the film made Rs 1.05 crores all over India on its first day. The weekend didn’t see much of a growth either, with the film making Rs 1.35 crores, thus far making only Rs 2.40 crores in India.
The film, apart from Khan, stars Padmapriya Janakiraman, Dhanish Karthik, Milind Soman, Chandan Roy Sanyal, and others.

On the other hand, there’s a new Hindi film that has entered the Rs 100 crore club – Judwaa 2.
Judwaa 2
Starring Varun Dhawan, Taapsee Pannu, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anupam Kher, and others, the film has reportedly made Rs 157.69 crore worldwide, earning Rs 102.33 crore in India alone.
The film, a new version of David Dhawan’s 1997 film of the same name, crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in eight days since its release on September 29.
