Malayalam releases dominate this week because of Vishu celebrations. Among the releases, the one to watch out for is Dileep’s comeback film, Kammara Sambhavam. Meanwhile, Karthik Subbaraj’s silent thriller Mercury is all set to release on Friday the 13th and there is also Shoojit Sircar’s October starring Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu.
As the strike continues, there won’t be any new Tamil releases this week as well.
Malayalam
Kammara Sambhavam
Actor Dileep is portraying the character of Kammaran Nambiar and sports three different looks in the film. Directed by Ratish Ambat, the screenplay for the movie is written by Murali Gopi. Siddarth makes his Malayalam debut with this movie. He plays Othenan Nambiar, a freedom fighter under the British Raj. The teaser showed a 90-year-old Dileep flipping through the pages of his past and then it cuts to show his hardened bearded look and also as a greying adult. The film also stars Murali Gopi, Bobby Simha and Namitha Pramod.
Ranam
Ranam – Detroit Crossing is said to be based on true stories, focusing on Tamil street fights. The lead character gets involved with some gangs and the rest forms the story. Directed by debutant Nirmal Sahadev, the film has Prithviraj play a gang leader shuttling between Detroit and Michigan. The film also stars Rahman and Isha Talwar. The film is bankrolled by Anand Payyanur and Biju – Rani Lawson under the banners Yes Cinema Production and Lawson Entertainment.

Aabhaasam
Aabhaasam, which is written and directed by debutant Jubith Narmadath, focuses on a group of people and their encounters during a long bus journey. The film deals with socio-political topics such as gender rights, women empowerment and the current politics and philosophies of MK Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The film stars Suraj Venjaranmodu, Rima Kallingal and Nassar as the lead star cast. Mamu Koya, Alancier and Indrans are among the supporting cast. The music has been composed by the band Oorali and the background score is by Dev.

This Bollywood film features Varun Dhawan, essaying the role of Dan and newcomer Banita Sandhu as Shiuli and the film is directed by Shoojit Sircar. The two are hotel management trainees, who make conversation while cleaning people’s rooms and laundry. Years later, Shiuli is found in the ICU. The life-changing incident leaves Dan dedicating his time in helping Shiuli get back on her feet. A winter romance, October is reportedly based on a news clipping Sircar came across a few years ago. The film is produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar.

Mercury
Touted to be a silent-horror-thriller, Mercury stars Prabhu Deva in the lead. Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the trailer showed a screaming Prabhu Deva seen in blue contact lens and a few characters looking for an escape. Since it’s a silent thriller, music is also a character in the film, ranging from loud menacing to ominous. This is the first time in 30 years, Indian cinema has a silent movie.
A silent film with ‘no language releasing in all languages’, it’s narration will solely rely on sound, body language and expressions and will have no dialogues. The haunting music for the movie is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

Krishnarjuna Yuddham
The film has Nani in a double role, one is a rustic local youth Krishna, while the other represents the ultra-modern metropolis hip-rockstar Arjun. The film also stars Anupama Parameshwaran of Premam fame and Ruksha Mir and is written and directed by Merlapaka Gandhi. The first single titled ‘Dhaari Choodu’ which has been composed by Hiphop Tamizha and sung by Penchal Das was released earlier and it garnered over 5 million views on YouTube. It’s a folk number with fast beats, a typical kuthu song. The film is a joint production of Sahu Garapati and Harish Peddi under Shine Screens Banner.
