Amartya Sen Documentary Row: Director Will Approach Tribunal

Amartya Sen, FCAT

Suman Ghosh, the director of a documentary on Amartya Sen titled The Argumentative Indian, has rejected the CBFC’s demand for cuts to the film, and plans to approach the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT).

Silverscreen had earlier reported that the Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani had asked the makers to cut or mute words like ‘cow’, ‘Gujarat’, ‘Hindutva’, among others

DNA now reports that Suman Ghosh is asking the FCAT to reverse the decision. Ghosh said, “I came to know it is an online process now where you can only opt for ‘Yes’ if you accept their (CBFC) suggestions or ‘No’ if you reject their suggestions.

“In my formal response I opted for ‘No’ option as there is no question of reconsidering my stand of effecting not a single cut in an Amartya Sen documentary.

“But since if a director says no in such situations, his film has to go to the revising committee, I guess I have to appear before the revising committee now in Mumbai,” he said.

Suman Ghosh had earlier said that if the issue was not resolved at the Revising Committee level, he would move the FCAT.
