The Malayalam film which will see the Lucifer actor play the titular character, began with an inaugural ceremony on Wednesday, which was attended by actors Mammootty, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, who directed Mohanlal in Lucifer. Lucifer was the highest grossing Malayalam film after it made Rs 200 crore globally.

Barroz is about a man who stands guard to a 400-year-old treasure of Vasco D’Gama and will be set in a Portuguese backdrop, according to IMDb. It stars Spanish actors Rafael Amargo, who will be seen playing the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama, Shayla McCaffrey and Paz Vaga, in lead roles, as reported by ETimes. None of the international actors, however, were present at the inaugural ceremony.

Lydian Nadhaswaram, the 13-year-old pianist who won the American television talent show The World’s Best in March 2019, will compose the film’s music, the actor had announced at an event organised by his production house, Aashirvad Cinemas.

Mohanlal, who was last seen in Drishyam 2, the sequel to the 2015 film Drishyam, had announced through a Twitter chat session in February that he would soon begin with his directorial venture. The actor who completed over 40 years in cinema, announced the film on his blog in 2019, and had said that it would be shot in Goa.

“After standing in front of the camera for all these years, I am moving behind it,” wrote the actor. Stating that his pursuit of creative satisfaction led him to the decision, Mohanlal had assured that his 3D fantasy film would be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

While the film was supposed to go on floors by the end of 2019, it was stalled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown.

The film is expected to release in 2022.
