Behind The Scenes Of Vijay Sethupathi Dubbing For ‘Super Deluxe’ Goes Viral

The trailer of director Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s much awaited Super Deluxe released last Friday, with Vijay Sethupathi’s frenetically-paced monologue telling us the story of a person caught between a tiger, a snake, and an abyss. Predictably, the trailer went viral. And, on Sunday, a video clip of the actor dubbing the dialogue for the trailer released.

The minute-long clip shows how the breathtaking dialogue was dubbed. His voice-over in the trailer which began with, “Oru naal, oru aal… (one day, one man…),” increased our anticipation about the film. It is Kumararaja’s sophomore feature after the cult classic Aranya Kaandam.

Sethupathi does multiple renditions, some loud, others almost a whisper, before finally getting the tempo and delivery right. In the trailer, the opening shots hang around enough to introduce us to the main characters, and as Sethupathi’s story-telling gathers steam, the cuts gets frenzied, and the characters start losing it on screen. There are enough carrots dangled to get our attention. Sethupathi is seen in a green sari, which later we see Ramya Krishnan wearing, and a little boy is the only one smiling throughout.

Vijay Sethupathi is known for his rhythmic recital of dialogues; it is something he has worked on consciously over the years. Remember his ‘medulla oblongata’ repeat dialogue from Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom? In an interview with The Hindu some years ago, he spoke of the famous ‘drunken prawn’ scene from Kaadhalum Kadandhu Pogum. “I fixed a rhythm in dialogue delivery. In the same sequence, my fake anger and my laughter when asked if we could marry… all were worked on.”

Super Deluxe stars Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Akkineni, Ramya Krishnan, Mysskin, Bucks and others. Thee distribution rights of the film was recently acquired by the newly-founded firm YNOTX, a collaboration venture of YNot studios’ Shashikant, Reliance Entertainment, AP International and Trident Arts. The film is set to hit screens on March 29.
