Padmavati, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, seems to be going through a rough patch as religious groups have been repeatedly attacking the sets of the film. Deepika Padukone, who is playing the titular role in the movie, has been surprisingly silent on the issue. The Piku actress, reports say, has been dodging questions about the movie for a while now.
A report in The Indian Express said that the 31-year-old actress was at a brand launch recently, and refused to comment on anything other than the brand. At another event, Deepika spoke in length about her collaboration with the director for the second time but, declined to comment on the sets being torched in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
This comes at a time when actors have been open about their comments on everything from the recent Karan Johar-Kangana Ranuat spat to the issue of CBFC refusing to censor Lipstick Under My Burkha.
Her co-star from the movie, Shahid Kapoor, though, has spoken up about the issue: “I am hoping that people will wait to see the movie before judging it as I think a lot of preconceived notions about it are around,” he said.

Padmavati stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles. The period drama will be based on the life of Rani Padmini, a Rajputana queen. Shahid will be seen as Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the husband and also the ruler of Mewar kingdom. Ranveer will essay the role of Alauddin Khilji, the Turkish ruler who leads the invasion of Mewar. Apparently, the plot line featuring a possible romance between the Rani and Khilji seemed to have irked certain fringe groups, resulting in the attacks.
The makers of the film, though, have repeatedly denied the presence of any controversial romantic sequence.
