Melur-based Kathiresan and Meenakshi, who claim to be Dhanush’s parents, have filed a petition with the Supreme Court appealing for the paternity case to be transferred from Madurai to Kerala or Karnataka. The case has been going on for the last three years, with the couple demanding a maintenance of Rs 60,000 per month from Dhanush.
They allege that Dhanush (born Saravana Prabhu) is their third son, who ran away from his school hostel to follow his film dreams. Their various petitions have claimed that Dhanush worked as a domestic help at director Kasthuri Raja’s home, and was acknowledged as their son only after he found success with Thulluvadho Ilamai.
In April 2017, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court heard a petition filed by Dhanush stating lack of evidence in their claims. Dhanush has repeatedly termed the couple’s claims as a bid to extract money from him, and, against their plea, refused to undergo a DNA test citing privacy. The Madras High Court ruled in favour of Dhanush, quashing all proceedings in the case.
The couple has since made three attempts claiming that the actor submitted false documents of identification. In October 2017, they filed a complaint at the Pudur police station in Madurai. The complaint stated that the actor’s identification documents were fake, and their advocate had verified them at the Government Women and Children’s hospital in Egmore and with the Chennai Corporation.

The birth certificate produced by the actor was issued by the Corporation of Chennai, and identified him as being born to Vijayalakshmi and her husband, director Kasthuriraja, at the Egmore Children’s Hospital in Chennai. The couple’s advocate stated that there were contradictions in the Gazette papers produced by Dhanush for his name change during school.
Their petition came up for hearing at the Madurai Court this January. The court ordered that a notice be sent to Dhanush, and the Madurai police, seeking explanation. While the couple sought criminal action against the actor in their complaint, they have not filed a contempt of court application as yet.
A source close to the actor refused to comment further on this case, because it is sub-judice.
