Flashback, the upcoming Tamil film starring Prabhu Deva and Regina Cassandra, is a coming-of-age story, says writer-director Don Sandy, who has earlier helmed the 2019 Tamil heist film Gorilla.
Produced by Ramesh P Pillai under Abhishek Films, Flashback features Prabhu Deva as a writer, while Regina essays the role of a teacher.
The first look posters of the film were recently released on social media.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, Don Sandy says, “The coming-of-age genre has not been explored much in Tamil cinema. I remember a film called Azhiyatha Kolangal by Balu Mahendra, and after that, I guess this is the next Tamil movie in the genre. While films like Premam and Autograph show different stages of love, this one will show the stages of attraction and infatuation, including the attraction of youngsters to older women. However, there will be no vulgarity or obscenity, which are commonly associated with such topics.”
The director wrote the script of Flashback by compiling his own school memories and those of his friends. It is a period film set in the 90s, in Kodaikanal and Chennai, he adds.
On casting the two leads, the filmmaker says, “I wanted an Anglo-Indian for the female lead, and since Regina has that ancestry, I chose her. As for Master (Prabhu Deva), we wanted someone who has a pan-Indian appeal since the subject is universal and he is one such person.”
He further adds that there will be no dances featuring the actor-choreographer in the film. “You can expect the unexpected from Prabhu Deva in Flashback.”
