IPS Officer D Roopa Moudgil Turns Playback Singer For Kannada Film

IPS officer D Roopa Moudgil, who exposed the special treatment given to the then AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala in Bangalore Central Prison, has turned playback singer for the upcoming Kannada film Bayalaatada Bheemanna, starring Ravichandran in the lead.

In an interview to Times of India Roopa said that music is her second passion, and for the film, she was approached by director Baragur Ramachandrappa to sing a song titled ‘Kempaane Soorya’, composed by Shamitha Malnad.

She said, “The director had come to meet me at my office and asked me whether I could sing a song for the movie. Considering that we have never met or communicated earlier, it was a pleasant surprise. He might have heard me singing at the television channels where I was asked to hum a few lines of a song. Since singing is a passion, I pounced at the opportunity. But before saying yes, I read the lyrics. I am not comfortable singing romantic songs. This one is about nature and the simple life one leads in a village, so I decided to give it a shot.”

Roopa trained in Hindustani music when she was posted as the Superintendent of Police in Yadgir district in 2010. In 2018, she also released a music video on International Women’s Day. She said, “Music is not an alternative career for me. But I will definitely continue singing.” Her favourite singers are S Janaki, Vani Jayaram, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, and Shreya Ghoshal.

Roopa is Karnataka’s first woman IPS officer. In 2017, she was posted as the Deputy Inspector General – Prisons, but was transferred soon after she reported the alleged irregularities in the prison Sasikala was in. She also faced controversies for naming other politicians, and was transferred 41 times in 17 years till 2017. She is currently the Inspector General of Police – Railways, and also sings, writes and shoots.
