Ka, the upcoming Malayalam thriller film, is set in Chengalchoola colony in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, the film’s lead actor Neeraj Madhav told Silverscreen India.

The film, written and helmed by debutant director Rajeeshlal Vamsha, also features Aparna Janardhanan, Biku Sopanam, Sreeja Das, Kannur Sreelatha, Nistar Sait, Sreejith Ravi, Vishnu Govind, Binoy Nambala, Jayakumar Shankar and Thaankachan Vithura in pivotal roles.

Neeraj said that Ka was his first Malayalam film in which he has done action and chase sequences. “I had worked on developing a well-built physique for this character and learnt Thiruvananthapuram dialect as the film is set in Chengachoola,” he said.

“Initially the dialogues in the script were written in a neutral dialect with the potential to be set in any of the colonies in Kerala. And that’s when I suggested Chengachoola as the director was from Thiruvananthapuram and aware of the locality and dialect. I sat with Rajeesh and his friends who were from the colony to learn the dialect,” Neeraj said.

Speaking about the film’s plot, Rajeeshlal said, “The story revolves around Niranjan [played by Neeraj] and his friends who are residents of Karimadom colony. In a bid to prove their skills and create a better identity for the colony, the bunch of friends collectively form a venture. What follows is an unexpected turn of events in which the lead actor is targetted,” he said.

Talking about Neeraj, Rajeeshlal said that they did not have any actor in mind while writing the script but wanted someone “young” as there were several actions and dance sequences in the film.

“Neeraj was the best choice as he is a flexible artist. We have tried a new makeover, a more mature look, for him in the film,” he said.

The director said that the film’s title symbolically refers to the initial of the colony’s name: Karimadom and a lot more crucial features in the film.

While Ka’s first look poster released in March, Neeraj said that the film was in the final stage of post-production. “We haven’t decided on the film’s release due to the uncertainty in reopening of theatres. However, if the same situation continues we may consider direct OTT release,” he said.

Ka is produced by Manju Jose, Sre, Arjun Ravindran with executive producer Bineesh Chandran. The film’s technical crew consists of RR Vishnu as the cinematographer, Jakes Bejoy as the music composer, Dinesh Subburayan as the stunt choreographer and Satheesh Krishnan as the choreographer. The story is written by Rajeev Rajan.

Speaking about upcoming projects, Neeraj who rose to fame with his performance in The Family Man said he was waiting for the release of his next project Feels Like Ishq, a Hindi anthology of short films that will release on Netflix.

“We are reworking Ennile Villian’s script while Pathira Kurubana‘s shoot is pending due to Covid-19 restrictions as it would be difficult to shoot outdoor sequences. Besides, I will be collaborating with a debutant director named Charlie for an untitled film produced by director Salim Ahmed,” he said.
