Karky Clarifies on Controversial Dialogue in Baahubali

Members of a local outfit in Madurai – Puratchi Puligal – staged a protest against the screening of Baahubali at the Tamil Jaya theatre in the city on Wednesday. Petrol bombs were hurled as the group was upset over some dialogues in the film which allegedly hurt the sentiments of their community.

Madhan Karky, the dialogue writer of Baahubali, then issued a clarification:

“In the dialogue, ‘En thaayaiyum thaai naattaiyum endha pagadaikku pirandhavanum thoda mudiyaadhu…,’ I had used the term ‘pagadaikku piranthavan’ to mean a person born out of loss in a game of dice. I did not know that it was the name of a community. In other scenes, the hero, who delivers this dialogue, is depicted as someone against caste-ism and even as a child, stands up for equality of all castes, against the norm of his nation. Such a protagonist would never talk ill of any caste.”

He added that the team is now taking efforts to remove or mute the word in the scene, and that he apologizes for the disappointment that the dialogue has caused.

Baahubali has been witnessing roaring success in Tamil Nadu, collecting around Rs 35 gross in 10 days since release. The film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah Bhatia, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyraj and Nasser in lead roles. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the film has went on to become the biggest blockbuster from South India.
