The film is produced by M Ganesh and J Dhanush under SkyMoon Entertainments and E5 Entertainment, respectively. Besides Keerthi, the film also stars Ammu Abhirami, Vidya Pradeep and Shaalin Zoya.

Interestingly, the makers have remained tight-lipped about the director of the film.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, producer Ganesh said, “It is a different film, script-wise and it is a conscious decision to not reveal the director’s name now. We will disclose it at the right time. It is a women-centric film featuring four heroines. We are also planning to bring a surprise element into Kannagi.”

A source close to the production, on condition of anonymity, provided further details to Silverscreen India. “There is a working woman character, a girl who wants to get married, someone who is trying to make a mark in a patriarchal society, and one who suffers a social stigma. These women come from different backgrounds and this is a female-centric film that many women can relate to,” said the source, adding, “The film does not glorify women or their difficulties but reflects what is happening in society and what they are facing. If you observe, certain castes are oppressed in India, while elsewhere in the world, certain races are subjugated. However, women are suppressed everywhere. This thought process has evolved into this story.”

The source revealed that the director is a debutant and a former associate of filmmaker Mohan Raja, who began toying with the idea of making his directorial debut after Velaikkaran (2017).

Kannagi went on floors in December 2020, with cinematograher Ramji helming the camera. There are still a few portions left to be filmed. The team is also simultaneously working on the post-production.

When asked about the release, the producer said, “I am trying for both OTT and theatres. We have got a couple of offers from OTTs. It will take another two months for the production work to be completed, by which time we will take a call.”
