Vishal Bhardwaj, the Hindi filmmaker, is all set to collaborate with actor Tabu once again for his upcoming Netflix spy thriller Khufiya. Tabu and Bhardwaj have worked together in Maqbool and Haider. The upcoming film will also star Ali Fazal.
According to a press release, Khufiya, produced by Vishal Bhardwaj Films is based on the espionage novel Escape to Nowhere by Amar Bhushan.
Khufiya is a “story about Krishna Mehra, an R&AW operative who is assigned to track down the mole selling India’s defense secrets. All along, grappling with her dual identity of a spy and a lover” as per the official synopsis.
“With Khufiya, my attempt is to create an edgy espionage film that contrasts the slow burn of intelligence & surveillance work with one’s deep-rooted emotional conflicts”, Bhardwaj said in a statement.
“Khufiya is a one-of-a-kind project, extremely close to my heart and I am excited to be a part of this gripping spy thriller. As always, it’s a delight working with VB (Vishal Bhardwaj) again, and feels like homecoming,” Tabu said in a statement.
The film also stars Wamiqa Gabbi and Ashish Vidyarthi in pivotal roles and will go into production by the end of September.
Talking to Hindustan Times, the director said that he is excited about his OTT debut. “It is my first web project and I am very excited about it. Since it is based on a true event which happened in Delhi, around 70% of the film will be shot in the national capital, and the rest in the US.”
He also told the publication that he wrote the film keeping Tabu in mind. “My best work has been with her. I wrote this character keeping Tabu in mind.”
