The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday closed a public interest litigation (PIL) against actor R Madhavan which alleged that the actor encroached a water body at Palani in Dindigul. The case was heard before the division bench of justice Nooty Ramamohana Rao and justice SS Sundar. A person from the government had filed a report stating that the tehsildar of Palani had inspected the site in question, and had found that there was no encroachment made by the actor. Following this, the court closed the petition.
N Ganesan, the PIL petitioner, is a resident of Balasamudram village of Palani taluk in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. On March 16, 2015, Ganesan filed the case alleging that the actor had bought 1.97 hectares of land in Balasamudram from P. Rajammal. He also alleged that 4.88 acres of the land was a hindrance to the water channel known as Rajavaikkal, which also happens to be the main source of irrigation in nearby villages Ayyampauli and Balasamudram.

It was alleged that the actor’s land not only encroached upon a water body but also encroached on government land. Coconuts and guava saplings were planted on it and electric posts erected on the encroached land, the petitioner said in June this year. In addition to accusing the actor, the petitioner also accused the district collector of inaction in spite of knowledge of this issue.
The actor was issued a private notice by the petitioner, with the case postponed twice in the past. The actor, however, has chosen not to comment on the PIL ever since it was filed.
