According to sources, the Madras HC dismissed the petition seeking a stay on the arrest of Kavithalaya theatre authorities, filed on behalf of the theatre association. The court ordered to take action against the theatre management and investigate the matter further. The verdict came on the day that the Narendra Modi government announced that an anti-camcording provision will be added to the Cinematography Act to help prevent piracy.

In January, a legal complaint was sent to the TFPC by producers Sakthi Vasan (Raja Ranguski) and Mohammed Assam (Oru Kuppai Kadhai), stating that the council did not protect small-budget film producers from piracy.

The letter stated that the producers’ films Raja Ranguski, Oru Kuppai Kadhai and Thodra were leaked online by theatres Kavithalya and Ellora in Karur, and Gomathi in Mayiladuthurai, on the day of its release. The producers said that if action was not taken against the theatre management and piracy websites like Tamilrockers, Tamil Gun etc., they would organize an in-house agitation and indefinite starving protest at the council office.

The TFPC has been in the midst of controversies for sometime now. Vishal was earlier arrested after a group of dissenting producers locked the TFPC office in T Nagar, and he attempted to break the lock and enter by force but was held back by the police.

The producers have criticised Vishal alleging that financial irregularities had become commonplace since the actor took over as TFPC president. Some have also accused that the actor of being partial to the big budget producers, and not supporting small budget films as promised during TFPC elections. They further allege that money in the TFPC account is missing.
