Manchester By The Sea Leads Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations

The nominees for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards for outstanding individual, cast, and ensemble performances in film and television in 2016 were announced today. Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By The Sea has four nominations in film performance categories. In the television categories, Netflix newcomer Stranger Things got three nominations, as did The Crown, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, and Westworld.

The nominees for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture are Captain Fantastic, Fences, Hidden Figures, Manchester By The Sea, and Moonlight. The last time a movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture without being nominated in the SAG Awards’ ensemble category was two decades ago when Mel Gibson’s Braveheart won the Best Picture at the Oscars. La La Land, which is being considered as an Oscar Favorite, has not been nominated in the category.
Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep were recognised as nominees for outstanding female actors in a motion picture. The best male actor in a motion picture nods went to Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield, Ryan Gosling, Viggo Mortensen, and Denzel Washington. Many critics called it a snub that Tom Hanks’ for Sully and Joel Edgerton for Loving were not in the list.
The Crown, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things and Westworld were picked up for the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series category.
