‘Playboy’ Founder Hugh Hefner Dies At 91

Hugh Hefner, American magazine publisher, businessman, and editor of Playboy magazine, died of natural causes on Wednesday, a statement from the magazine read. He was 91.

Hefner, a millionaire, was also a political activist and philanthropist, and was associated with several causes and public issues. While he started out as a copywriter for Esquire magazine, he later managed to generate funds from various places including a bank loan, and some money from his mother, to begin his own establishment. In 1953, the first edition of his Playboy magazine was out, featuring Marilyn Monroe from her 1949 nude calendar shoot – over 50,000 copies were sold.

He has also starred in a number of films and TV shows where he mostly played himself, including The House Bunny (2008), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Miss March (2009), TV shows The Simpsons and Entourage.

In an interview with CNN once, he said: “I would like to be remembered as somebody who has changed the world in some positive way, in a social, sexual sense, and I’d be very happy with that. I’m a kid who dreamed the dreams and made them come true.”

He is survived by his wife, Crystal, his sons, Cooper, David and Marston, and his daughter, Christie.
