Puzhu, the upcoming Malayalam film starring Mammootty and Parvathy Thiruvothu in the lead roles, will be a family drama, the film’s PRO Siva Prasad P told Silverscreen India.
Directed by debutante Ratheena Sharshad, the film was formally launched on August 17 at the Choice School in Ernakulam, marking the occasion of Chingam 1, the first day of the Malayalam New Year.
Puzhu will also feature Nedumuni Venu, Malavika Menon, Swasika, Indrans and Jaffar Idukki, among others in pivotal roles.
According to Siva Prasad, the film’s shooting commenced on the following day of the Pooja ceremony. After a short break for Onam, the team resumed the shoot, he said, adding that Mammootty is expected to join the sets soon.
“The team has planned a two-schedule shoot. The first 40 days will be completely shot in Ernakulam, while the last five days will be shot in Kuttikkanam in the Idukki district,” he added.
Puzhu is produced under the banner of CYN-CYL Celluloid by S George in association with Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films. Renish Abdulkadher, Rajesh Krishna and Shyam Mohan serve as the film’s executive producers.
The story of Puzhu is written by Harshad, who also wrote the story of the 2019 Mammootty-starrer Unda, while the script has been written by the duo Sharfu and Suhas along with Harshad.
Ratheena, who has previously served as an executive producer for the Parvathy-starrer Uyare, first announced her directorial debut in August 2020, without revealing details about the cast and crew. Later, Puzhu’s title poster was launched on March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Theni Eshwar has been roped in as the cinematographer for Puzhu while Jakes Bejoy will compose the film’s music. Eshwar has previously worked with Mammootty on the 2018 Tamil film Peranbu.
Deepu Joseph will be in charge of editing and Manu Jagadh, who has worked on films like Bahubali and Minnal Murali, is heading the art department. Vishnu Govind and Sreeshankar are slated to work on the sound design.
Meanwhile, Mammootty, who was last seen in the political drama film One, is also working on another upcoming Malayalam film titled Bheeshma Parvam, directed by Amal Neerad.
