Rajshri Deshpande On Trolls: ‘Society Won’t Change With A Police Complaint’

Rajshri Deshpande’s lovemaking scene in Sacred Games has earned her an unsavoury sobriquet. The actor, who plays Subhadra – Ganesh Gaitonde’s (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) wife on the show, was trolled for her topless scene and it has found its way to numerous porn sites as well.

Deshpande, who was part of S Durga and Angry Indian Goddesses, said that she has learnt to move on from such issues. “Everything goes viral these days, and only for these reasons. It’s a phase that’ll go away, people will forget. I’ve moved on,” she told Elle

Deshpande has faced worse situations in her career. For her role in S Durga, the actor received hate mails, death threats and warnings of acid attacks. There was no nudity in the film, but she faced criticism nonetheless. She filed an FIR with the police. Now, she doesn’t see the point in making yet another complaint as it will not change society’s mindset.

“You can’t scream on social media all the time. Our society’s mindset will not change with a complaint. It’s a disease, and you need to work towards it at a ground level, because reel life activism stays only in reel,” she said.

It should be noted that Sacred Games released on Netflix – a digital platform that doesn’t come under the purview of the censor board. The Cinematograph Act and its rules applies to only films in theaters, home media, and television.

Based on Vikram Chandra’s novel, the show follows a troubled cop (Saif Ali Khan) as he tries to stop a terrorist attack. Earlier this month, a Congress worker had filed a police complaint against the show claiming that the showed late PM Rajiv Gandhi in poor light. The scene in question has Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character referring to Gandhi as a wimp. A PIL was filed by an advocate over the same scene. After Rahul Gandhi tweeted that he against any ‘policing of free speech’, the complaint was withdrawn.
