Ritika Singh will play a sports journalist in Arun Vijay’s upcoming film Boxer. Interestingly, the actress had played a boxer in her debut film Irudhi Suttru and a journalist in Aandavan Kattalai.
The movie is directed by debutant Vivek, a former associate of Bala. Talking to ToI about the actress’ role in the movie, Vivek said “Ritika plays a sports journalist who aspires to become a boxer. I wanted someone who knows the sport and can act well. Ritika is a mix of both. Her role is an important one. In fact, after I roped her in, I added several layers to her character based on her real-life skills. When she heard the script, she was very excited.”
He also said that realistic portrayals of journalists are hard to come by in movies. He has tried to be as authentic as possible when it came to the actress’ character. “Some of the journalist portrayals on celluloid aren’t really showing what a typical journalist goes through. But in reality, they run around so much to get their stories done. And that’s exactly what her character Meera does in the film,” said the director.

According to Arun Vijay, it is a dream role. “It has been my dream to do a sports-based film and I am completely charged up. The script is a mix of emotional and inspiring elements that instantly appealed to me. Conventional sports-based films have had protagonists who struggle initially only to emerge victorious at the end. This film, however, has done away with the underdog story. Instead, the hero is a top league boxer who has to confront his internal problems to move forward,” said the actor in a statement.
“The movie includes both freestyle boxing and martial arts, and the stunt choreographer Peter Hein has got me in touch with some of the best trainers,” he added.
The movie is produced by V. Mathiyalagan of Etcectra Entertainment. Markus A Lujungbern has been roped in as the cinematographer and Leon is the music composer. The rest of the crew is yet to be finalized. The movie will go on floors in March.
