SC Slams Latha Rajinikanth Over Non-Payment Of Dues To Ad Firm

Actress Latha Rajinikanth at Vijay Awards 2014 Event

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, once again pulled up Rajinikanth’s wife, Latha Rajinikanth in connection with the payment of dues to Ad Bureau Advertising Pvt Ltd. The apex court asked her why she has not made the payment yet and when she intended on doing so.

As it was reported earlier, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to Latha Rajinikanth asking her to respond to a case filed against her in a Bengaluru court by a post-production unit involved with the CGI film Kochadaiiyaan. The unit, an ad bureau, had accused Latha of fraud.

In the petition, the firm’s lawyers said that Latha had promised to give them the distribution rights of the film in return of Rs 14.9 crores. While they had handed over the promised sum, they alleged that Latha failed to keep her word and sold the rights to a third party instead. An FIR was lodged in Bengaluru after Ad Bureau Advertising filed the complaint on 9 June, 2015, alleging that Latha had produced fake documents in the court to commit fraud and illegally sell the rights of the film to an entertainment company.

After the release of the movie, the producer paid Rs 8.7 crores but the remaining Rs 6.2 crores was due. Earlier in February, the SC had issued a notice to Latha Rajinikanth, directing her to pay Rs 6.20 crore with interest within 12 weeks to the ad firm. As Rajinikanth’s family has still not cleared the dues, on Tuesday, the SC once again pulled up Latha Rajinikanth for non-payment of dues.

According to News 18, a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi took exception to Latha’s attempt to avoid payment and stated, “We don’t like people playing around with court orders. We think you should face the trial. If you’re innocent, you will be acquitted. Face the trial.”

Made on a budget of Rs 125 crores, Kochadiiyaan is an animated historical drama directed by Rajini’s daughter, Soundary Rajinikanth. The film, which was a box office failure, starred Deepika Padukone, Sarathkumar, Shobana and others.
