Actor Shraddha Kapoor is set to play naagin, a shape-shifting serpent, in an upcoming trilogy helmed by filmmaker Vishal Furia.
Sharing the news on social media, Kapoor wrote: “It’s an absolute delight for me to play a Naagin on screen. I have grown up watching, admiring and idolising Sridevi ma’am’s Nagina and Nigahen and have always wanted to play a similar role rooted in Indian traditional folklore.”
The trilogy will be bankrolled under the Saffron Broadcast & Media banner headed by Nikhil Dwivedi and is reportedly titled Naagin. This will be Dwivedi’s third production venture after Veere Di Wedding and Dabanng 3.
In the past, actors such as Sridevi and Rekha have played the role of Naagin in separate films.
Replying to Kapoor’s post, Furia wrote: “It will be lovely to direct you as ‘Nagin’.. you will totally rock it coz of your belief.. together we’ll create a totally magical ‘Indian’ story of an ‘Indian’ female mythical super-character.. welcome aboard.”
Furia has directed Marathi horror-thriller Lapachhapi. Earlier this year, it was announced that the hit film will be remade in Hindi. He will be helming the Hindi remake, with Nushrat Bharucha in the lead role. Furia has also co-directed the web series Criminal Justice, an Indian adaptation of the British show of the same name, streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
Kapoor was last seen in Baaghi 3, directed by Ahmed Khan and co-starring Tiger Shroff and Riteish Deshmukh, and Street Dancer 3D directed by Remo D’Souza and co-starring Varun Dhawan and Prabhu Deva, both of which released earlier this year.
She also has a yet-to-be-titled film by Luv Ranjan, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor, in the pipeline. The film, to be produced by Ranjan and Ankur Garg, is slated to release in March 2021.
