Filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who is known for his Academy Award winning movie, Silence of the Lambs, died in New York on Wednesday morning. He was 73. As per a CNN report, the director died of complications from esophageal cancer.
His movies include Philadelphia in which Tom Hanks was seen as a lawyer battling AIDS, the 1998 movie Beloved which saw talk-show host Oprah Winfrey in the lead role, and the Talking Heads concert film, Stop Making Sense.
Silence of the Lambs though, swept the Academy Awards in the year 1992 for Best Picture, Best Director, Actor, Actress and also Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkin’s character, Hannibal Lecter, was later known as one of the iconic villains Hollywood movies had ever seen.
Friends and colleagues of the filmmaker took to Twitter to condole his death.
