Sridevi says her comments about her daughter Jhanvi Kapoor marrying and settling down, have been misunderstood. In an Instagram post, the actor says that she hopes her daughters have a happy life and find their own identity, and lead a stable, relaxed life.
Sridevi had earlier spoken to Mid-Day, as part of promotions for the upcoming film MOM. In the interview, she said, “She wanted to do the film and initially, I wasn’t in favour. I don’t think it’s a bad industry. I am a creation of this world. But, as a parent, it would give me greater joy to see her married. But her happiness matters more, and if she does well as an actress, I will be a proud mother.”
This statement was criticised. Many called her out for seemingly suggesting that women need only get married and settled down, not pursue a career of their choice. To answer these criticisms, and to clarify her statement, Sridevi took to Instagram and Twitter, and said that she had merely expressed a desire to see her children have a stable, relaxed career and life.
Sridevi’s film, MOM, releases on 7 July. A crime thriller, the film features Sridevi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna, and others. Produced by Boney Kapoor and Sunil Manchanda, it is directed by Ravi Udaywar. AR Rahman is the music composer.
