“Can I get a hug?” asks Vijay Sethupathi’s character to Jayaram’s in the first teaser of Marconi Mathai, a comedy-drama that marks the former’s debut in the Malayalam film industry. The short teaser doesn’t spill any detail of the film’s plot, but introduces the lead characters through an FM radio programme where Sethupathy, who seems to be playing himself, talks to a caller named Mathai (Jayaram) with a prefix, Marconi, which stands for Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of the radio.
The film, directed by Sanal Kalathil and produced by Premchandran AG, will release in theaters on July 11. Aathmiya, who played a pivotal role in Joju George’s Joseph last year, is the female lead of Marconi Mathai. Jayaram is said to be playing an ex-Armyman in the film. A video song from the film, a fun number set against a pre-wedding night, released on YouTube last week. M Jayachandran has composed the film’s soundtrack, and Sajan Kalathil is the director of photography.
Jayaram was last seen in My Great Grandfather that released in theatres during the Eid weekend.
According to a Times Of India report, Vijay Sethupathi might also appear in a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual, alongside Nayantara and Mammootty, this year. The actor recently began shooting for his 33rd film, directed by Venkata Krishna Roghanth. He plays a musician in the film that has Amala Paul as one of the two female leads. The actor has SU Arun Kumar’s Sindhubaadh coming up on June 21, and is also a part of the ensemble historical Telugu film Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, directed by Surendar Reddy and produced by Ram Charan. His co-stars in the film include Nayantara, Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, Sudeep and Tamannaah. He has also signed up for Ka Pae Ranasingam, a romantic drama set against a rural backdrop, produced by KJR Studios and directed by P Virumandi.
