The release of debut director C. Prem Kumar’s romantic drama 96, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan, is scheduled to hit screens on October 4. The film was initially slated to be released on August 31, and later pushed to September 7.
The actor confirmed the date through his official twitter handle.

Earlier last week, a source associated with the film tells Silverscreen that the team will take a call on the final release date in a day or two. While trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai also tweeted news about the film’s postponement last week.

Firstpost suggested the film will be released on September 13 to cash in on the Vinayagar Chaturthi weekend. But, Sivakarthikeyan’s Seema Raja is releasing that day, and the source said theatres will find it difficult to split shows among two box office darlings Vijay Sethupathi and Sivakarthikeyan.
The trailer of 96, which was released in August-end, portrays the love between a high school couple belonging to the ’96 batch who meet each other after years at a school reunion.
The film marks the directorial debut of Prem Kumar, who had worked as cinematographer in Balaji Tharaneetharan’s Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, the sleeper hit known for Vijay Sethupathi’s popular ‘medulla oblongata’ dialogue.

Talking about the scripting experience, Prem Kumar said he wrote the film in December 2015 when Chennai was flooded and people were stranded in their houses for days together. He said, “I was stuck in my apartment in Valasaravakkam. There was no power or connectivity. If I had to go out to buy grocery, I had to swim. And I was the only one who could swim in my entire apartment. In those twenty days, I wrote 96.”
The music of 96 has been composed by Govind Menon of Kerala-based band Thaikkudam Bridge fame has gone viral; he also composed for the recently-released Asuravadham. Nandagopal of Madras Enterprises has produced the film.
The film also stars Janagaraj, S Janaki, Kaali Venkat and Aadukalam Murugadoss.
96 is being billed as a love story told from the perspective of a man – it travels across three different stages in his life.
